There’s something truly magical about eloping at Dead Horse Point State Park. Perched high above the canyons near Moab, this location offers panoramic desert views, dramatic red cliffs, and golden light that seems to last forever. For couples looking for a meaningful, stress-free wedding day surrounded by nature and a few of their closest friends, this Utah gem is the perfect backdrop.
Dead Horse Point State Park is one of the most breathtaking spots in all of Utah. Overlooking the Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park, it offers an epic mix of adventure and intimacy. This park is ideal for couples who want a wedding day that’s all about connection, experience, and the beauty of the desert.
The park is easy to access, yet feels secluded. With plenty of overlooks and trails. With the wide open spaces you can create a personalized experience that feels peaceful and unforgettable. Plus, the sunsets here are unbeatable.
Planning a shorter elopement day doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty or emotion. Here’s an ideal 3-hour elopement timeline for Dead Horse Point:
2:30 PM – First Look Behind the Visitor Center
One of the best hidden gems in the park is the overlook area behind the Dead Horse Point Visitor Center. It’s a quiet, easily accessible spot surrounded by red rock formations and desert vegetation. The soft afternoon light and sense of privacy make it perfect for a secluded first look before heading to your ceremony location. The backdrop gives you a mix of canyon depth and textured cliffs—an incredible way to start your elopement adventure without distractions.
3:00 PM – Ceremony at Dead Horse Point Overlook
Surrounded by your closest friends, you’ll exchange vows against one of Utah’s most dramatic backdrops. The wind in your hair and the echo of your voices in the canyon. it’s simple, intimate, and absolutely beautiful.
3:30 PM – Celebration with Friends
Cut the cake and take time to soak it all in. This is your chance to celebrate with the people who mean the most to you.
4:00 PM – Sunset Portraits
As the light turns golden and the sky begins to glow, we’ll capture those dreamy, cinematic portraits. The red cliffs light up during golden hour, making it the perfect finale for your elopement day.
5:30 PM – End Time
Depending on the month of your wedding, sunset time may very. In the fall when the sun sets earlier this timeline will be great for soft beautiful light.
Permits: Be sure to secure a special use permit through the Utah State Parks website. It’s a quick and simple process.
Best Time of Year: Spring and fall offer mild weather and vibrant colors.
Timing: Plan your ceremony around golden hour for the best light.
What to Bring: Water, comfortable shoes, and layers—temperatures can drop quickly after sunset.
Guests: The park is perfect for small groups under 20 people.
During one of my favorite elopements here, Heather and Josh surprised their friends and family with the sweetest announcement tucked right into their wedding flatlay—they were expecting a baby! We styled their flatlay with their rings, vows, and a tiny pair of baby booties alongside their invitation suite. It was such a thoughtful way to weave a personal story into their day, and it made the moment feel even more special. These are the kinds of meaningful details that make your elopement uniquely yours.
As a Utah elopement photographer, I love helping couples plan personalized celebrations in wild and scenic places like this. From location guidance to timelines and permits, I’ll make sure your experience is effortless and fun! You can simply show up, take it all in, and celebrate the beginning of your next adventure together.
